Though never fired upon in battle, the fort’s magnificent construction, which includes gun emplacements and curved granite stairs, is a monument to mid-nineteenth-century military engineering. Fort Carroll now abandoned and overgrown, serves as an “involuntary park,” a frightening reminder of a past period, and a potential treasure mine for future preservation efforts.

Dundalk Patapsco Neck Historical Society & Museum: If you’re interested in going into the rich history of the Patapsco Neck area, including Dundalk, Maryland, then the Dundalk-Patapsco Neck Historical Society and Museum is a must-visit. Founded in 1970, this entirely volunteer-run organization is dedicated to collecting and preserving the region’s unique past. Their museum, housed in a historic building, showcases artifacts, photographs, and documents that tell the story of the area’s economic activities, cultural traditions, and even military history. From the arrival of the first settlers in 1652 to the development of Dundalk’s shipyards, the Society offers a window into the lives of those who shaped the Patapsco Neck.
3. Francis Scott Key Bridge: The Francis Scott Key Bridge, once a vital artery connecting Dundalk, Maryland to Baltimore across the Patapsco River, is unfortunately no longer standing. It was tragically collapsed in March 2024 after a collision with a container ship. This steel arch bridge, once a majestic landmark, served as a major route for the Baltimore Beltway (I-695) for nearly 47 years. While currently unusable, plans are underway for a replacement bridge scheduled for completion by fall 2028.
4. Turner Station Park: Turner Station Park is located on Peach Orchard Cove in Dundalk, Maryland. This 5.5-acre green space offers a scenic escape for residents. Though not extensive, the park caters to a variety of interests. Families with young children can enjoy the playground equipment, while those seeking a peaceful walk can explore the park’s natural beauty. For boating enthusiasts, Turner Station Park boasts a unique feature: four launch ramps that can accommodate even large vessels.
